Variety Portrait: Ananasrenette
And what lies behind an apple with such a likeable yet bewildering name? Presumably noble birth and an unresolved, perhaps mysterious origin.
The trail leads to the 18th or 19th century in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. This much is certain: in the century before last, there were countless orchards and almost as many apple varieties.
Against fierce competition, Ananasrenette prevailed with its blend of joy and sophistication, becoming 'Everybody's Darling'. Its steep career also took off in South Tyrol and only experienced a setback after a hundred years at the dawn of industrial apple production.
On sunny Ritten, in good air, on the right soil, and above all tended with great experience, Ananasrenette grows again. Juicy, aromatic in flavour, somewhat reminiscent of pineapple – some also discover notes of citrus fruits or blackcurrant – this historic apple variety is excellently suited for production as a single-variety mountain apple juice and can, as in days gone by, showcase its finest qualities: fresh, fruity and a little frivolous.
