What is the story behind this apple variety? It is anything but common, hardly ever found at a market. The variety is special, that much is certain. And like many things that are special, it provokes clear reactions: there are people who love the apple, and others who can do without it. 6 September 2024 \u2013 the designated day for the start of the harvest in our ROUGE apple orchard. The apples are ready, fully ripe and healthy. Now Thomas Kohl and his team pick them from the tree with expert hands. Thomas Kohl cuts one apple into pieces. And the visitor\u2019s eyes widen: inside and out \u2013 everything is beautifully and vibrantly coloured red.

Extravagant Beauty

From the outside, the Rouge looks like a normal apple. What makes it unique only reveals itself when you cut it open. While other apples have light, often yellowish flesh in various shades, the Rouge conceals a cheerful red within, which also brings a special flavour with it.

Red Cheeks & Red Flesh

The Rouge\u2019s special colouring begins with the skin. Responsible for this is the high content of anthocyanins, natural plant pigments that also colour the flesh red. The anthocyanins offer health benefits. They protect cells from oxidative stress and support the body\u2019s detoxification. This makes the Rouge a true \u201cresistance fighter\u201d.

We press our mountain apple juice from the apples. Good looks count for little to us (even though we find the apples so pretty). What matters is a distinctive flavour profile. With a bouquet of redcurrant, cherry and rhubarb, the Rouge apple\u2019s flavour is characteristic. Its acidity lends it a refreshing and invigorating note that unfolds its full effect especially as juice. Whether as an aperitif, with antipasti or with Asian dishes \u2013 the juice is versatile and elevates any meal to a new level.
